Fan Back

he Fan Back is the biggest and most beautiful Windsor I make. The 32-inch crested top is supported by two turned posts and nine hand-rivened and shaped oak spindles. The Eastern White pine seat is 26 inches wide. The knuckles, either walnut or cherry, on the ends of the hands are carved by hand and include a volute on both sides.
The tailpiece on the back of the chair is mortised and dovetailed into the underside of the seat. Off this tailpiece are two more spindles supporting the wide crest. This chair is commonly used as a formal sitting room, great room or executive office seating.

Rocking Chair

f all the chairs I make and of everything said about them, this chair remains the "house favorite." Whether it's the simple beauty of the three-piece back or because it's a rocking chair, or maybe a little bit of both, I haven't quite put a finger on it.
Yet, whether this chair is in the kitchen, on the sun porch or in the office, it's the first one to be sat in and the last one left alone.
It is a sackback with a small crest which was originally used to hang either a small pillow from or as a hanger of sorts for a folded shawl or lightweight blanket.
Like other crested chairs, the 31-inch spindles are pegged into this crest.
The hardwood maple rockers are only one-half inch thick allowing for a very smooth rocking action.

Writing Arm

his is probably one of the most versatile, albeit beautiful Windsors.
Introduced by Philadelphia chairmakers circa 1765, they are not only practical, whether as a chair in a study, den, library or office, but also as a morning coffee and newspaper chair.
It's 27-inch oak crest is bored and firmly pegged to the seven long rivened, hand hewn oak spindles supporting the arm rail.
The writing tablet, shown right-handed, can be ordered either way. Made of Maine grown Eastern white pine or a highly figured hardwood, this tablet is supported by a third post which is anchored to a tailpiece on the chair's side.

Stool

y popular request, I've added stools to my inventory of styles. Historically accurate, they are comfortable and functional for the needs of today. The legs on my stool are 24" high.
